Darshan at Beaumont Dec 2014.jpg

Line up:
Darshan Jesrani (Startree, Environ / NYC)
Koosh, DJ Neighbour, James Flavour

More info:
Darshan Jesrani’s recording project “Metro Area” (together with partner Morgan Geist)has left an indelible mark on the dance music landscape. Known for its forward-looking,
freestyle recombination of influences, Metro Area’s work revolves around experiments with classic production styles and the songwriting focus of disco, new-wave/synth-pop
and R&B. Metro Area has injected much needed doses of funk, sensuality, mood and space back into the loop-based and seldom-subtle world of underground dance.

Their 2002 debut album elicited superlative responses from The New York Times to TheOnion, from web-logs to the Wire. Metro Area won a place among Rolling Stone’s “Top
50 Albums of 2002”, a rock and rap-dominated list for which most club/dance projects are not even considered. Further accolades include BBC/Radio 1’s “Dance Album of theYear” and a “Best New Artist” prize at the 2003 DanceStar/American Dance Awards.

In 2007, Darshan caught the collective ear with his co-writing, production and remix work(alongside Ewan Pearson and Klas “Sasse” Lindblad) on “It’s All True”, the debut single from beloved UK singer Tracey Thorn’s (Everything but the Girl) solo album “Out of the
Woods” (Virgin). This release made waves in broader arenas and was touted as a freshand uplifting update of the Funhouse-style, vocal-led, New York City synth-pop sound of the early/mid-80s.

Darshan’s extended “Parks Dept. Dub” remix of “Starlight”, an underground hit by celebrated and hungry New York disco upstarts Escort (July 2006) landed on the yearend
top-10 lists of many DJs known for their selections and taste.

Metro Area 7, the latest in a series of 12” EPs, was released November 2007 to superlative praise. Metro Area’s mix CD for Fabric (late 2008) was considered by Pitchfork to be both of one of the best modern disco mixes and one of the best in the series. In 2010 Resident Advisor named Metro Area’s “Miura” number 1 in their top 100 singles of the past decade, and their Metro Area album at number 2 in their top 100 albums of the past decade.

Having completed the first phase of his studio, which operates out of a commercial loft in Brooklyn, Darshan is preparing a battery of material for release on his new Startree imprint, produced and distributed exclusively by Word and Sound.

Startree’s first release “All-Night People” by Funn City was released at the end of last year and was included in Spin’s Top 50 dance singles of 2013.

Darshan’s unique remixes for Permanent Vacation, Rekids and Mock & Toof, among others, have stood on their own as playable pieces of music, irrespective of the original works.

Darshan performs worldwide both as a solo DJ, and as a DJ and live PA together with Morgan Geist as Metro Area.

It is November. A time to reclaim your happiness, to shout "fuck you!" to the onset of rainy season blahs. Not like it gets any easier. What with the price of limes, the amount of electioneering going on, the intransigent evisceration of progressive dialog by monolithic cabals of self-interested myopic sociopaths, the embargo on pogs(tm), and the all-consuming demands of the media age... but where was I? Oh yes. Reclaiming your happiness.

Join us for an evening in pictures at the Remington Gallery in the downtown east side of Vancouver.
We hope we can inspire everyone to open their minds and follow their heart.

The gallery viewing will be accompanied by a short documentary complied from personal footage that was shot while we were wandering around.

For most of the world Halloween is a holiday where you strap on a costume and go door to door asking randoms for candy (which lets be honest, sounds like a lot of fun) but here at D-Blok Studios we do Halloween a little differently, namely with a giant sound system, big visuals, a couple hundred of our closest friends and some epic talent that will shake your boots off, including Salmon Arm heavyweight Abstrakt Sonance, Vancouver legend Woodhead and local superstars Spoon, Hertz Donut, B-Mid and of course the incomparable Badger! So get your tickets, and get on down to where Duncan's rave scene is the strongest and where the vibes can't be beat! GET SPOOKY!

8-9 :: Badger
9-10 :: B-Mid
10-11 :: Spoon
11-12 :: Hertz Donut
12-130 :: Woodhead
130-3 :: Abstrakt Sonance

Abstrakt Sonance
A force like no other in the bass music world. Slaying every genre, plus experimenting into uncharted realms, Abstrakt is still very known world wide with his Dubstep and Drum & Bass. His influences and attitude were born from years of absolute madness, abuse, drugs, near death and a desire to use these negatives as a positive and create something new, something that constantly evolves with him on his new life. His mind is now on a focused path to constantly create and share his message and music with the world. With constant shows, and tours slowly tracing around the globe, Abstrakt will no doubt be a name, and a face, you wont soon forget. http://www.westaveproductions.com/abstraktepk.php

Homebreakin Records, East Van Digital
Vancouver’s Darren Woodhead is a West Coast institution. Having cut his teeth touring Western Canada and the States with punk bands, He then went on to host the now legendary Sauna Sessions podcast, broadcasting live from a mobile sauna party somewhere in East Van, and hosted the hugely popular Signal Saturdays at the now defunct Lotus Lounge. He was a mainstay at the Renegade stage at another fabled West Coast festival, Soundwave.
Fast forward to the present and Woodhead has played every big festival in Western Canada to much aplomb. Famous for marathon sets at hours no one in their right mind wants to play, Woodhead thrives playing for people who want to keep the vibe alive. Whether the crowd is in the thousands or single digits he makes sure everyone is dancing.
He has been producing in the studio as well, having some great remixes and originals on scene stalwarts Homebreakin’ Records, Montreal's Editorial Records as well as local upstart East Van Digital, and currently co-organizes the hugely popular Body Language Series in Vancouver with other local luminaries like Neighbour.
The DJ’s DJ, is true journeyman who has clocked more hours than anyone in the scene, Woodhead’s sets get better every year and are guaranteed to bring the vibe he is famous for. Who else can DJ in a 100 degree wooden box or battling 90km winds on Canada’s rugged west coast?
Look out for his new EP Morning Wood on Punchout! Recordings as well as a new album Voices from S2 collaboration Clyphs , this past October on Homebreakin Records.

Hertz Donut

Hertz Donut is the collective of Mitch Mckinnon (Apatchi Sound) and Tim Lange (CrashCourse). First meeting in 2013 - the duo were both hard at work with their solo projects, playing shows, and putting out music on a regular basis around BC's interior. In March of 2014, the duo packed up their belongings and lives, and headed for Vancouver Island. After many late nights spent around the studio in what was known as The 5D Paradigm Warehouse, Hertz Donut was born. The two have been busy ever since the idea first came to be, and are showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Expect to hear tonnes of new original music and remixes being cooked up constantly as these two sound addicts continue to glaze the world bass.

My latest release on Punchout! comes out on 12 Inch vinyl this Monday. Thought it would be fun to celebrate at The Recovery Room with a few of my favorite djs.

Now available on Groove Dis http://www.groovedis.com/shop/Woodhead-THE-MUSIC-EP-12.html

I might have a few copies to give away if the shipping goes as planned. Pre-view the release here:

Homebreakin Records

Woodhead is back once again with a sure-shot four track banger of an EP that will keep you dancing all night and most of the next day.

The Music is an ode to roller skating that will keep you bouncing with flanged out disco bass and more than enough disco wind.

On The Floor is a straight forward roller with hiphop lyrical snippets that tell you that terrible funk is what's up and you know it is.

Electricity brings the elastic funk guitar and percussion that will keep you break dancing even after the cardboard wears out

Crazy Motion is about a love affair that lasts including a moog solo that might land you on the moon although the song might just be about trying to have sex on a water bed

Duo Solidisco is the fastest growing name in house music. Anza Club tonight. I'm setting up an LED lighting installation for this party.

Chinatown Events & Friendly Monster Records present; RED DEVIL DISCO 003 [Red Light Party] at the Anza Club

Deep Disco | Disco House | Boogie | Rare Edits [vinyl only]

DJ OSMOSE, Atlanta, GA (Smokecloud, Whiskey Disco, FMR001)

Turntablist flare with dancefloor sensibility, Osmose has worked with a wide range artists such as Grandmaster Flash, Sleazy McQueen, Ursula 1000, Nicola Conta, Thunderball, Ramadanman, Boozoo Bajou, Boo Williams, Kai Alce, Mykal Rose, Collie Buddz, The Aggrolites, Dubconscious and The Wailers (both versions of the group). Osmose plays a variety of styles from Disco, Funk, Soul, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Deep House, to Nudisco & more, but always keeps it analog! With over 17 years experience behind the decks Osmose now spends most of his time touring North and South America with lots of records.

In 2011 Osmose launched Smokecloud records, a vinyl only label that is mastered and pressed in the USA. The label focuses on the slower side of soul & funk based dance music, but sprinkles in a few dancefloor burners. The label is geared towards DJ’s that play a diverse array of venues. Outside of vinyl releases on Smokecloud records, he also has vinyl out on the France based Whiskey Disco imprint and Canada's Friendly Monster records with forthcoming tracks on the Toronto based Long Weekend records, Honey Disco and a remix on the Boogie & Beatdown imprint Rotating Souls.

* HRISTO [Friendly Monster Records & Honey Disco]

Raised by a rare music collector while growing through a major revolution period of dance culture of Eastern Europe; later discovering western Europe’s underground music scene, Hristo has experienced and learnt a lot and he has brought it with him to the Canadian west coast. His sets are built with erotic stompers, vintage progressive psychedelics and cosmic funk combined with modern dance sounds; all timeless grooves forming an epic, character rich dance cocktail that takes mind and body on a journey.

Hristo’s 12” vinyl only project Friendly Monster Records marked the beginning of his 2014 music endeavours featuring cuts from him, Koosh and Osmose, both legendary masters with regular limited vinyl only releases. Hristo is also the guy behind Honey Disco Records, experimental label releasing oddity looking and sounding records that are gaining more and more popularity in the underground scenes throughout the world. Started as an experiment back in 2011 with an annual release schedule now the label is featuring some really obscure cuts from Hristo, Koosh and Eddie C. As per usual there is a release party celebrating each release and now also with the idea of doing one in a different location around the world. So far Victoria and Berlin have been put on the map with next one coming out this summer set to be in another major city on the west coast. Hristo edits and reworks are also featured on Smokecloud Records. Osmose’s Atlanta based vinyl only label that is featuring tracks by some very well established and regarded talents in the industry.

* BENDY [Friendly Monster Records 002]

A Summer Serries veteran. Like many of Bendys vinyl only records he can only be heard live.

* INKSTER [Chinatown Events]

An all around weirdo with weird eclectic record collection.

Cover Charge: $10 presale - More at the door.

Body Language 13.jpg

Triskaidekaphobia, a word coined in 1911, refers to a fear of the number 13. It gives name to this aversion to what is truly an arbitrary numerical representation of quantity. Had we decided to use ᓰﬡ to represent the position of the object after number 12, people would probably find some way to be symbolically scared of ᓰﬡ. Interestingly, several of music's brightest lights have tackled superstition as subject matter - Stevie Wonder, Janet Jackson, The Pixies, and Steve Miller have all taken inspiration from this quirk of human nature. So in the spirit of psychological liberation and lyrical polemics, we invite you to enjoy a night of dancing. Superstitious or not, thirteen is a milestone, and if you're like me, you're already getting withdrawal from that classic get-down feeling. So, join us for a night of kinetic conversation and be reminded of your eloquent bodies by...

DJ Soup (Nelson / Pagoda)

One of the vertebrae in the backbone of Kootenay party music, Rob Campbell has most recently been instrumental in re-envisioning the Main Stage at Shambhala. His guidance has transformed and electrified audiences not only with stunning stagecraft, but also careful and considered musical choices. His DJ sets are similarly curated- a true collector and digger, he combines unreleased and up-to-the-minute fresh goods with forgotten gems of the vinyl era.

Our Friends at Some Kind Of Music Blog put together a compilation featuring some fine producers. Hit up their site to download. Link below.

"Today, we are thrilled to begin a new chapter for SKMB with the release of our first compilation album. Over the past year our team of music enthusiasts has blossomed into some kind of family. Along the way, we have had the opportunity to work with a ton of really talented individuals putting a lot of time and energy into creating forward thinking music and events in their cities. This compilation is an opportunity for us to showcase the work of some of the friends that we’ve met along the way thus far.

SKMB Compilation Vol 1 features music by 11 artists from Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and the UK. The album begins with local feel good house favs WMNSTUDIES & KID VIBE before going into a playful house track from Homebreakin Records vet Spilt Milk. Next up is a collaboration from Nelson born, Vancouver based artist Ryan Wells and Calgary’s Wax Romeo, two artists that have been tearing it up on the regional festival circuit the past couple of years. Following is a spacey house remix of local duo CLYPHS by one of our favourite guys in the local scene, BIKES. From there things get a little deeper and darker with music from two Vancouver duo’s, Howl Sound and Clyphs, as well as Toronto based artist Third Floor. The album finishes off with two songs from UK artists, one pounding house track from WATSN followed by a more mellow and spaced out beat to finish it all off from London’s Artikal.

Huge thanks to Michael Levine for sponsoring this album and making it happen!"

With Bass Coast Project and Shambhala both wrapped and the dust having literally settled for most of us, we invite you to join us this Monday as Darren Woodhead gets you settled back in to our lovely little East Van meca on the Drive.

You've seen the movie - now read the book! Shambhala's magic extends past that mystical weekend and straight into our lives allllll year long... right? So let's fire up the band and celebrate the outrageous talent of our city by reliving the glory of our rave conquests in our own heartland.

Vancouver's premier afro-latin dance band slaughters dancefloors with its world-class 4-piece rhythmic firestorm.

Lighta's don (you have to call him a don in bios for some reason) needs no introduction. Seen.

A massive year for the syncopation man with releases on Brownswood, B.YRSLF Division, and many others.

Aufect boss is a stone-faced killer. Crushing polyrhythms and crunk vibes.

Weird fashion sense, decent dub house music.

Dread pirate nightmare raz vocal guru notches belts and controls vibes.

Recent moves include massive EPs on PUNCHOUT!, stunning ravers with Lighthead! visuals at festies, and grinning alot.

SKMB collaborator and all-round great dude. Rising beast in the deep-house game and party pleasing execution.

It's a f@cking rock night!!

Thanks to everyone who made the first annual Show & Shine a huge success.

Now that it's over and we need another reason to bring all the crew together. Enter #LordsTakeover Vol 5. We're teaming up with the wholesome crew at Number 5 Orange on August 14th for your favourite summer night.

Last time we put a bike on stage, there was a fire show, and some sort of a 'bike wash' ;)

This time there will be a contest with more water involved!

This year I'm working at The Amphitheater Stage bring my Lighthead Visuals set-up and projecting visuals all weekend. On Saturday at 8pm Clyphs will also be performing a live set. Couldn't be more charged for a festival.

It's all about the people on the dancefloor! www.shambhalamusicfestival.com

This is Canada’s premiere Electronic Music Festival. Cutting edge Talent, Lights and Sound come together in Paradise to give life to a non -sponsored family run anomaly. Seeing it for yourself is the only way to understand exactly what is Shambhala.
