cosmic-xmas-party-2013-woodhead-update.jpg

This party is to raise money for the Empty Stocking Fund. Lets get cosmic at the planetarium.

THIS IS A COSMIC ANNOUNCEMENT
Hi everyone! The Cosmic Christmas Party is just around the corner, and we are really stoked by the response so far. Before the night is upon us there are a few things we would like to remind everyone of that will help take it from a killer party to an event of cosmic proportions! Perhaps even more important than having a very nice time, this event is in support of a very worthwhile cause. This year marks the the 95th anniversary of the Province's Empty Stocking Fund, a charity that has been helping families and other Vancouverites in need during the holiday season. Let's do this!! And make it their best year ever! In order to do this please remember to bring $20 or an unwrapped gift (kids 6 months-16 years) for donation upon arrival. As well we are having a raffle featuring awesome prizes generously donated by our good friends at Endeavor, Cottonmouth, Inner Space Yoga, Pizza Carano, Menu Skate Shop, Airhole, Red Dragon Apparel, Lords of Gastown, Daybreak Spa and Pender Harbour Resort. We want to say thanks for all of the support we have received so far, and still welcome prize donations. Let's do it for the kids! Now... TO THE MOON! -Greg

All good music should tell a story. Tales of experience. Tales of joy. Tales of love lost and won. A Tale of Us.

Tale of Us are Berlin-based DJ and production partnership Karm and Matteo who are currently re-writing the rulebook for deeply moving, emotional electronic music. Together they share a sonic vision that pulls together elements of house and techno with influences from pop, nu-disco and even rock music. While all of their productions are instantly recognisable as Tale Of Us, these range from straight-up dance floor jams to low-slung ambient tracks and more abstract compositions. Already regular fixtures at clubs like Watergate and Weekend in Berlin, Tenax in Florence, Barraca In Valencia and DC10 in Ibiza they have grown up throwing secret loft parties called ‘Just This’, in their hometown of Milan. While both originally hail from North America, Karm was born in Toronto and Matteo in New York, they moved to Italy as children, which is where they met and formed the close working bond that they now share.

At present they are based in Berlin, an inspirational frontier, which has given them numerous opportunities to build relationships with fellow musicians who share their unique musical outlook. At the forefront of these like-minded visionaries are Seth Troxler, Shaun Reeves, Ryan Crosson and Lee Curtiss, who have been passionate supporters of Tale of Us since they first heard their music; so much so that they released Tale Of Us’ debut EP release on their new ‘Visionquest’ label this spring.

Prior to this, Karm and Matteo had already released tracks on labels such as 'Barraca Music' and 'Life & Death' and had put out various remix collaborations with fellow 'Visionquest' label mates Shaun Reeves & Ryan Crosson. In particular the Tale Of Us remix of Thugfucker ‘Disco Gnome’ on 'Life and Death' was hailed by Mixmag as one best records of 2010. Their next remix on the horizon sees the duo try their hand at something totally different, with a standout remix of a track from the upcoming album of the rock band 'Who Made Who' which fuses together both rock and techno, managing to create something incredibly raw and poignant.

Upcoming events will see them perform both live & DJ sets at locations around the world including the Visionquest showcase at the Shelborne in Miami during WMC, the Detroit Movement Festival (DEMF) and Sonar in Barcelona. They are also booked to play at Klubber's Day in Madrid, Fiesta Privada in Rome, Elita Festival in Milan and many other quality venues throughout Europe.

The story continues…

Things are going to be heating up inside Beaumont Saturday night.

"Sly ol' winter may be fixin' to cool things off around these parts, but these two-steppin' youngsters in Vancouver ain't no shut-ins. And ya gotta admit there's somethin' special about number 10. Sorta what I might call a milestone, ya hear? A one 'n a zero. Binary typa shit." - Sheldrick Mancrake

Isis Graham

I heard more than one industry heavyweight tell me that she easily had their favourite set at Bass Coast. I could only agree. Our super-pal "Ice" is one of Calgary's finest DJ / producers, a singer / songwriter, promoter, and on top of it all, still finds time to be a tireless supporter for her musical friends. Currently she holds a residency at Habitat Living Sound, where her Friday party Nu*Movement has become their flagship night. Her style behind the decks is irresistibly smooth and musical. Usually she's mixing up chicago-style classics with new heat, finding a great balance between deep hypnotic grooves and in-your-face funk business. Her album "In the Garden" is a moody downtempo exploration and is a must-listen for rainy Vancity afternoons. Do yourself a favour and like / follow / buy here...

With a background in beatmaking and live music, it wasn't until his introduction to house music in 2010 that BIKES came into his own. Always placing the vibe above everything else, his sets tend to run the gamut of house, with a sprinkling of nu disco, while his productions showcase a knack for soulful sample selections. Expect big bass lines, driving percussive rhythms and the ability to deliver exactly what the dance floor needs no matter what time of night, or morning, it is.

Dice at Electric Owl poster.jpg

Tonight we invite you to roll the Dice at Electric Owl. I'll be joining Scotty, Dunks and Smoothie on the decks. Always fun at Electric Owl.

So last year right around this time we started a weekly night in the Waldorf Tiki Bar called DICE Thursdays and I have to say it was really damn good! Unfortunately the Waldorf Productions was forced to close their doors and our night came to an end but this Friday we are bringin it back for a 1 off at the Electric Owl!

If you like good people, better times and the sounds of Darren Woodhead, Dj Smoothie, & Myself, then I suggest you roll on down and have a boogie with us - Dunks

Making the drive up to Squamish to hang out and play music with some super great people.
Time to get Ruddy!

We are super excited to have Woodhead play the little room!

Vancouver's Darren Woodhead is a West Coast institution. Having cut his teeth touring Western Canada and the States with punk bands, he picked up DJing from one of his band mates. He then went on to host the now legendary Sauna Sessions podcast, broadcasting live from a mobile sauna party somewhere in East Van, and hosted the hugely popular Signal Saturdays at the now defunkt Lotus Lounge. He was a mainstay at the Renegade stage at another fabled West Coast festival, Soundwave.

Fast forward to the present and Woodhead has played every big festival in Western Canada to much aplomb. Famous for marathon sets at hours no one in their right mind wants to play, Woodhead thrives playing for people who want to keep the vibe alive. Whether the crowd is in the thousands or single digits he makes sure everyone is dancing.

Mark-Farina-Imperial-2-lighthead-visuals.jpg

Lighting and visuals for legends tonight!
Nordic Trax Presents:

MARK FARINA
[Great Lakes Audio, San Francisco]

Modern day record minstrel, Mark Farina, has thrilled crowds globally, entertaining over 1 million fans per year. As one of the most ubiquitous DJs in Dance Music, Farina’s known for both his unique style of mixing Jazz, Downtempo and House Music as well as being the creator of Mushroom Jazz: West Coast jazzy, organic productions combined with East Coast Hip-Hop, Urban beats.

Drawing from his vibrant youth, which included being a trumpet player in marching band, a drummer in a nu wave cover band and a guest DJ, Friday nights on WNUR(Chicago), Mark found his passion for the luscious world of vinyl, turntables and nightclubs. At 16, Farina began his DJ career as a resident at Chicago’s underage mecca, Medusa’s. At the same time Mark joined forces with emerging DJs Derrick Carter and Chris Nazuka then moved into a loft space called Rednail. Rednail became infamous not only for raucous parties but also as the home to the trio’s first productions under the moniker, Symbols & Instruments. Their release,”MOOD,” sold 35,000 copies in the US & UK and is credited as “the first ambient house track.”

Farina relocated to San Francisco in 1992. Fans embraced Mark’s downtempo style and he started co-hosting a weekly Mushroom Jazz club night in ?93. In 3 short years, Farina established a fanatical, cult-like following for his Mushroom Jazz sound and in 1996, OM Records released the first mixed comp CD, simply titled, Mushroom Jazz. Since then, Mark has released 7 volumes of Mushroom Jazz with 2013 marking the 20th anniversary of the series. Other notable releases include OM's Seasons, San Francisco Sessions Vol. 1, Connect, House of Om, Live in Tokyo, and Fabric 40.

When Mark’s not touring the world, headlining festivals including Harbourlife (Sydney), Southport Weekender (UK), DEMF (Detroit), Coachella (CA) and T in the Park (Scotland), you’re likely to find him in his studio working on new releases or podcasts for his label, Great Lakes Audio. On days off he’ll be cruising his ’68 Toronado with his son, Dylan (aka “little peanut”), and his Yorkie, Pumpkin.

Voted as one of the top DJ’s in the world by URB, MUZIK and BPM magazines, Mark Farina’s taste making skills continue to turn the heads of seasoned Dance Music veterans as well as newcomers to the scene.

Guy Gerber has always been comfortable as an outsider. From being the rock kid at the rave, to the Israeli DJ on the European club circuit, to the electronic producer with a fetish for live instruments, he tends to skirt the edge of whatever scene he's in. It's a position that suits him well-so far it has led to dozens of lush, melodic records, an ever- evolving live act and his own label, Supplement Facts. This nonconformist attitude, combined with the emotional content of his art (so rare in today's electronic music), explains how Gerber keeps his audience locked in, be it on record or on stage.

Before he was fiddling with drum machines and synths, Gerber was all about groups like Joy Division and My Bloody Valentine. These influences still echo clearly in his music today, especially in his use of harmony, contemplative moods and trippy, shoegaze- inspired sounds. It's a style that's anything but conventional, yet one that quickly drew in some of Europe's most popular labels; three years after his recording debut, Gerber released the first of several records on John Digweed's Bedrock imprint. A couple of years later, Sven Väth signed him to Cocoon, eventually releasing his album Late Bloomers. All the while, he was building Supplement Facts from the ground up, showcasing his own productions alongside those by likeminded artists, and illustrating each record sleeve by hand, so each release embodied his distinct creative panache.

These days Gerber has the kind of artistic freedom he's always wanted, and it shows. Supplement Facts is more adventurous than ever, melding organic with electronic sounds. Meanwhile, he's embarked on his most unexpected project yet: an album with P Diddy, who hired him for some remixes and took him on more permanently after hearing the results. Now the hip-hop icon flies Gerber out to his studio in LA to work, where he gives him “2000% artistic freedom." The experience has been transformative. ”Something opened my mind out there," says Gerber, noting how his approach to music has changed. For one, his rock roots are seeping back in; despite being named one of RA's top 10 acts of the year, he's scrapping his laptop for something more “live,” playing bass guitar over drum machines, and remembering the importance of lyrics. It's impossible to say where all of this is headed, but with a talent as bold and unorthodox as Gerber's, it couldn't happen any other way.

Electric Owl presents:

EVERYTHINGS FINE FRIDAYS

w/

DUBCONSCIOUS + Woodhead + Killing Time

Dubconscious has come to represent both the east & the western coast of Canada. Born & raised in the Toronto area, he attended University in Victoria before spending 2 years in Nelson BC, snowboarding in the winters & working for the talent department at Shambhala Music Festival - a role that has developed into the title of Entertainment & Social Coordinator. He's also become a resident of the Living Room Beach Stage over the past 4 years, also performing on the Village Stage 3 of those years.
Having recently made the move to East Vancouver, this seasoned selector brings a plethora of fresh flavors to the table – heavy basslines mashed up with a roots reggae infusion, funky bashment vibes, bassy house, future jams, classic hip hop & trip hop, with a dash of turntablism.

clean-water-party.jpg

At Beaumont Studios on Nov 15th.

It's that time of year again. It's your opportunity to shake away your pre-winter blues and boogie down to celebrate some of your favourite mid-November birthday buds. Brenda, Terence and Shannon's birthday trifecta super-jam!

This isn't any regular old trifecta super-jam. NO. This is a super-jam with a philanthropic twist!

We will be donating all of the ticket sales from the party to Charity:Water, an incredible charity that is focused on brining safe accessible drinking water to people around the world. Check out their website: www.charitywater.org

So, not only will your party ticket get you a fabulous night of super-grooves from DjWood& DjSoo, Woodhead, Sam Demoe, Blenda & Memio, and the weird and wonderful MC ThinkTank, it will also be donated to this amazing cause.

Look at you! Partying in the name of clean water.

Visuals provided by Lighthead Visuals. Tickets in advance-recommended donation $30 Or you can donate directly on the charity:water website to brenda's birthday campaign, just bring a print-out of your donation for entry!

Just great music, big sound, freaky decor and custom visuals. This is without a doubt our most anticipated event of the year. Costumes a must...
