I'm on visuals for this night, going to be one to remember.

Nordic Trax Presents

Tensnake
[Astralwerks/Defected, Germany]

Another Vancouver debut from Nordic Trax, we welcome
Tensnake, aka German DJ and producer Marco Niemerski. He made his name to most with the huge 2010 dancefloor smash Coma Cat, and since then has been in ever increasing demand. Seemingly effortlessly managing the elusive feat of marrying classic disco and house influences to a contemporary sound, Marco is in that very rare position where his music appeals equally to the biggest dancefloors, from Ibiza and Miami, and real chin-stroking aficionados. All of which has gained him a solid reputation as a producers producer. His music effortlessly transcends genres, and the release of his debut album Glow looks set to cement his reputation as a major talent.

Full bio:

Born in Hamburg in 1975, Marco grew up listening to disco, soul, boogie, funk and the finer cuts of 80s pop, from Prince, to the more Balearic tracks from Simple Minds to, er, Prefab Sprout. His older brother also introduced him to other influences like freestyle and boogie to Italo-pop. As he grew older he went through a Mod-period before finding and embracing more dancefloor-inspired influences from Larry Levan to Junior Boys Own, Romanthony to Masters of Work.

With such a diverse set of influences, it’s no surprise Marco’s own music has already shown more depth than most artists manage to achieve in a lifetime.

After starting the Mirau label with friends in 2005, Marco’s first record was ‘Around The House’, which he felt was “a
lucky strike” at the time, but still sounds fresh six years on. The Mirau motto is ‘Not mass but class’ and over the years it has steadily grown into an international label, and released their first compilation album last year, as well
as Erdbeerschnitzel’s excellent album “Tender Leaf’.
It was the aforementioned all-conquering ‘Coma Cat’, which first made Marco’s name. “I knew as soon I wrote it that I had something special,” says Marco, “but I never expected it to be so big, or last so long”. But although ‘Coma Cat’ may have been the breakthrough, the 80s tinged, more cinematic and laidback ‘Congolal’, and ‘Mainline’, Marco’s 2012 collaboration with UK vocalist Syron, and storming remixes for everyone from Aloe Blacc and Friendly Fires to Lana Del Ray clearly showed the depth of Marco’s range. Then there was a sublime mix of ‘Ritual Union’ for Little DRagon, a beautiful downtempo piece which was so good that vocalist Yukimi Nagano herself sang a show-stopping live version of the song with Marco in Miami last year.

It was a sign of things to come. The first single released from his forthcoming debut album, the smooth, down tempo ‘58BPM’ with Fiora surprised a few people when it was released. “That was deliberate decision,” says Marco, “I wanted to make a statement with the first single and surprise people.” With shades of Prince and a brilliant remix from Mano Le Tough, it was another reminder that it was proving impossible to corner this Snake.

When he first appeared on the scene his early releases were seen as a welcome antidote to the omnipresent minimal house scene of the time. If there’s anything Marco is rallying against with Glow, it’s what he sees as the sidelining of the songwriting in the desperation to create big brash dancefloor moments, in the wake of the rise of EDM. “I feel like people have forgotten the art of songwriting,” explains Marco, “which is all important”.
It will come as no surprise to fans of Marco’s mixes, which always take listeners on a journey, that Glow is an album
that stands alone as a complete, cohesive piece of work, rather than a collection of dancefloor tracks collated on one CD. It’s one of those rare beasts, a dance music album that makes total sense if you sit down and listen to it at home from start to finish.

Glow features collaborations with Fiora, Stuart Price, Jamie Liddell, MNEK (British singer Uzoechi Osisioma Emenike), Jeremy Glenn, Gabriel Stebbing (Nightworks)… oh, and the mighty Nile Rodgers from Chic, who plays on two tracks.

There’s been a million misinformed column inches written about the return of disco over the past couple of years, but
for Marco, disco never went away, it’s been an ever-present influence in his record collection and music, so for Marco collaborating with Nile Rodgers was a dream.

“I couldn’t believe he was so grounded,” says Marco. “I sent him a message on Facebook, and didn’t really expect a reply, but he replied himself 20 minutes later and he said he knew my music. I sent him the music and he called me and said, ‘Would you mind if I was just your session musician on this track’ which was amazing.”

Lighting and visuals for legends tonight!
Nordic Trax Presents:

MARK FARINA
[Great Lakes Audio, San Francisco]

Modern day record minstrel, Mark Farina, has thrilled crowds globally, entertaining over 1 million fans per year. As one of the most ubiquitous DJs in Dance Music, Farina’s known for both his unique style of mixing Jazz, Downtempo and House Music as well as being the creator of Mushroom Jazz: West Coast jazzy, organic productions combined with East Coast Hip-Hop, Urban beats.

Drawing from his vibrant youth, which included being a trumpet player in marching band, a drummer in a nu wave cover band and a guest DJ, Friday nights on WNUR(Chicago), Mark found his passion for the luscious world of vinyl, turntables and nightclubs. At 16, Farina began his DJ career as a resident at Chicago’s underage mecca, Medusa’s. At the same time Mark joined forces with emerging DJs Derrick Carter and Chris Nazuka then moved into a loft space called Rednail. Rednail became infamous not only for raucous parties but also as the home to the trio’s first productions under the moniker, Symbols & Instruments. Their release,”MOOD,” sold 35,000 copies in the US & UK and is credited as “the first ambient house track.”

Farina relocated to San Francisco in 1992. Fans embraced Mark’s downtempo style and he started co-hosting a weekly Mushroom Jazz club night in ?93. In 3 short years, Farina established a fanatical, cult-like following for his Mushroom Jazz sound and in 1996, OM Records released the first mixed comp CD, simply titled, Mushroom Jazz. Since then, Mark has released 7 volumes of Mushroom Jazz with 2013 marking the 20th anniversary of the series. Other notable releases include OM's Seasons, San Francisco Sessions Vol. 1, Connect, House of Om, Live in Tokyo, and Fabric 40.

When Mark’s not touring the world, headlining festivals including Harbourlife (Sydney), Southport Weekender (UK), DEMF (Detroit), Coachella (CA) and T in the Park (Scotland), you’re likely to find him in his studio working on new releases or podcasts for his label, Great Lakes Audio. On days off he’ll be cruising his ’68 Toronado with his son, Dylan (aka “little peanut”), and his Yorkie, Pumpkin.

Voted as one of the top DJ’s in the world by URB, MUZIK and BPM magazines, Mark Farina’s taste making skills continue to turn the heads of seasoned Dance Music veterans as well as newcomers to the scene.

LLW-Turkey-Burner-2013.jpg

Lighthead is on visuals tonight.

With the dust still not settled and recovery from the 10 year anniversary not complete, it is time for the next round of LLW: the Turkey Burner edition! That's right boys and girls, you are most likely to eat a lot of turkey around that time, so what better way to burn it all off than dancing to the killer tunes of Yousef (Cocoon, Circus), Kevin Shiu, Abasi, Max Ulis, and the Librarian. There will of course be two rooms, house and bass music, and most importantly, underground dancing fun times. So join us and let's party, would ya?

This will be the last #LLW of 2013!

#LLW #10YearsOfLLW

YOUSEF (Cocoon, Circus) • DJ Kevin Shiu

Mezzanine
Abasi • Max Ulis b2b The Librarian

YOUSEF // Liverpool, UK // Circus, Cocoon, Cecille

Yousef is a man firmly in control of his imminent destiny. Having been at the forefront of dance music fan’s attentions across the globe since the latter stages of the last century, he’s an artist that continues to evolve and develop with consummate ease. New sounds, new developments and new frontiers; they all remain an instrumental part of his thrust forward as one the planet’s leading underground House music tastemakers.

As a producer he continues to smash preconceptions about not only his style but the wider spectrum of House and Techno as well. Recently he’s gifted his beats to an ever expanding cluster of the most revered and respected imprints in the business, be them Carl Cox’s Intec, Nick Curly’s Cecille, Nic Fanciuilli’s Saved, the effervescent Monique Musique and of course Sven Vath’s timeless label Cocoon which released ‘Come Home’, Yousef’s stunning piece de resistance.

He’s recently finished his second full artist album, adding a series of more musically focused tracks to his resume alongside the serious (self penned) emotive vocal moments and of course many dance floor workouts (currently getting endless love from Loco Dice, Magda, Nic Fancuilli, Carl Cox, Guti and Uner). Coming soon is a developing live concept that redefines how electronic music is experienced.
